The 2022 BMW 7 Series finishes in the bottom half of our super luxury car rankings. While it’s powerful and posh, it doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by some of its classmates.

  • Powerful engines
  • Intuitive infotainment system
  • Roomy, comfortable cabin
  • Unimpressive interior by class standards
  • Finicky infotainment gesture and voice controls

Is the BMW 7 Series a Good Car?

Yes, the BMW 7 Series is a good car. Its powertrain lineup includes a six-cylinder engine, two V8s, a V12, and a plug-in hybrid, all of which are potent in just about any driving situation. Handling is OK, and the ride remains supple even over rough pavement. The 7 Series has a stylish, well-constructed interior with plenty of intuitive tech features and a large trunk. As befitting a super luxury car, both rows of seats are plush and supportive, and there are plenty of high-end seating upgrades.

BMW 7 Series Versus the Competition

BMW 7 Series vs. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class usually takes the top spot in our super luxury car rankings, and it features arguably the best interior of any car on the market. The S-Class has elegant styling, top-flight materials, and exceptional seating comfort and space. It’s loaded with technology as well. As for performance, the S-Class has powerful engines and a supple ride. This Mercedes costs more than the 7 Series, but it’s worth the extra money.

BMW 7 Series vs. Audi A8

The Audi A8 is another outstanding pick in the class. It and the 7 Series each provide composed handling, a comfortable ride on rough pavement, generous seating space, and many standard features, all for a similar starting price. However, the A8 has an almost futuristic infotainment system with dual touch screens that work quite well. The Audi also sports fresher interior styling and slightly higher-end materials. The 7 Series has an edge in terms of trunk space, and it offers a wider variety of engine options.

7 Series Interior: Incredibly Nice, Yet also Underwhelming

7 Series Interior Quality

This BMW can’t match the standards set by the elite interiors of some rivals. That said, the 7 Series has a stylish interior with quality materials in most areas.

7 Series Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The 7 Series’ touch-screen infotainment system works well, thanks to its simple menus and redundant physical controls. Everything is easy to reach from the driver’s seat, and the interface is responsive and generally intuitive, though the hand gesture recognition system and "Hey BMW" voice assistant tend to misunderstand commands or miss them altogether.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 10.2-inch touch screen, navigation, voice and gesture recognition, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay
  • Available infotainment features: a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with two 10-inch touch screens and a tablet
  • Additional standard features: a panoramic moonroof, quad-zone automatic climate control, and remote start

7 Series Cargo Space

The 7 Series provides a decent amount of cargo room for this class. Most models have 18.2 cubic feet of trunk space. The plug-in-hybrid variant is the outlier, though; it only has 14.8 cubic feet, as the hybrid’s battery eats up the remaining area.

How Many People Does the 7 Series Seat?

This BMW seats five people. The front seats are comfortable, supportive, and spacious, even for taller occupants. The rear seats provide even better accommodations, especially when equipped with the optional rear center console and footrest.

7 Series and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the 7 Series’ rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

The Final Call

The 2022 BMW 7 Series is a stellar vehicle with all-around appeal, but more opulent rivals in the super luxury car class shine a little brighter. Yes, it’s powerful, comfortable, and stylish, but those are expected qualities in a luxury brand’s flagship vehicle. To truly contend in this class, a car needs to do more than just meet expectations, and the 7 Series falls short of doing that.
